Unique Monthly Visitors (UMV) & Reach

We measure reach through the unique monthly visitors the site receives

For online coverage, we report Reach using the site’s Unique Monthly Visitors (UMV).

This figure represents the estimated number of individuals who visit the website or outlet where your article appeared during a one-month period.

It’s important to note that this is not the number of people who viewed your specific article, but rather the size of the audience that regularly visits that site.

How do we get this number?

To ensure accuracy and consistency, we partner with Similarweb, a global leader in digital traffic analytics.

Our calculation process:

  1. We obtain the global UMV for the website.

  2. We then apply the percentage share of visitors per country to localise the figure.

    • For example, if your search is set to Australia, you’ll see the Australian UMV.

If country-specific data isn’t available:

  • When the lowest reported percentage share is below 1%, we use that figure.

  • When the lowest reported percentage share is 1% or higher, we default to 1%.

This method ensures that our reach figures remain both realistic and market-relevant, giving you a credible baseline for evaluating online media impact.

Why is this number different to another service I use?

You may notice differences when comparing our reach figures with other services.

Common reasons include:

  • Unique Visitors vs Total Visitors: Some tools report Total Visits, which count every page load. For example, if one person visits a site five times in a month, that would track as five visits. Our approach, using Unique Visitors, counts that as one, which provides a truer reflection of audience size.

  • Geographic Adjustments: Other services may not adjust for country-specific traffic, meaning their numbers could reflect a global audience rather than the market you care about.

By using Unique Monthly Visitors with country adjustments, we provide a more reliable measure of potential exposure, one that better reflects your brand’s reach within your chosen market.

Impressions

Impressions are calculated as the number of mentions multiplied by the UMV.

PR Value

First, we calculate

  • Ad Value: impressions divided by 1,000, then multiplied by the online CPM ($10).

PR Value is then calculated as Ad Value multiplied by three.
